People of the Drum – Portland Taiko

Portland Taiko is a non-profit cultural group that aims to inform the community by performing taiko for events around the Portland metropolitan area.

Director Kiyama wanted there to be photos of the event and social media promotions for it. The concert came back from a hiatus and required a lot of collaboration with Painted Sky Northstar Dancers, Mexica Tiahui and Alex Addy Drummers that performed to their drums.

The large scale event attracted visitors from around the Portland area. Gateway Discovery Park is a 3.2-acre park managed by Portland Parks & Recreation that helped host the show. At People of the Drum, the performers interacted with the audience and everyone seemed excited to be interacting with one another.

I worked on promoting the event online and on social media accounts. At the event, I posted live-streams on Instagram Stories and took snippets of video during performances.

The goal was to encourage families to go out on a nice summer day to interact with others in the community and learn how to appreciate cultural drumming.

The event planning and live-streaming helped give an idea of how followers reacted to the non-profit and supported them.

Those unable to attend in person were able to see snippets of the live drumming through social media and were excited by it. There were at least 100 people that attended the event in person, which indicated it as a huge success.
