Editor-in-Chief -The Advocate

The Advocate is a student-run newspaper by students of Mt. Hood Community College, located in Gresham, Oregon.

During my time with The Advocate, my goal was to be a leader when it was needed and to allow the freedom of creative thoughts and speech from my staff. Under my publishing year of 2016 – 2017, The Advocate won about 20 awards at the Oregon Newspaper Publisher’s Association.

When I took lead as Editor-in-Chief, it was during a time when the group needed organization. There wasn’t many people when we’d first started the year off in 2016, because we’d began with two editors to over 20 staff members.

The position demanded dedication and responsibility in a way that meant leading people from different backgrounds and allowing them to feel comfortable voicing their concerns.

Working with a group that was unbiased in their writing was the goal of my journalistic leadership and I feel like that was successful. Treating everyone in the group like family and with kindness went a long way.
